Masterplan Sloterplas

In 2002 Bureau Parkstad, a city agency established to supervise development and implementation of revitalization plans for the Garden Cities, asked me to start up and manage the planning process to redesign Sloterpark. Due to competing interests and overlapping governmental jurisdictions, the project presented challenges, both politically and conceptually.

I formed a working group made up of planners from the various relevant city agencies and a steering committee representing the interests of the many stakeholders, public as well as private. Community organizations and the general public were invited to monthly meetings to share their ideas and to stay informed as the planning process moved forward.

After a year of analysis and discussion, a set of criteria for the renewal of the park was agreed upon. Through a design competition H+N+S, a leading Dutch urban planning and landscape architecture firm, was selected to develop a masterplan. The masterplan was publicly launched in 2003. The first phase of the plan --a multifunctional loop for walking, biking and rollerskating around the central lake-- was completed in 2007.
