Masterplan Sloterplas In 2002 Bureau Parkstad, the city agency established to supervise development and implementation of urban renewal plans for the Garden Cities, started the planning process to redesign Sloterpark. Due to competing interests and overlapping governmental jurisdictions, achieving a unified reconfiguration of the park involved great challenges both politically and conceptually. A working group that included planners from the various relevant city agencies was formed, and additionally, a steering committee representing the interests of the many stakeholders, public and private, involved in the project was established. Community organizations and the general public were invited to monthly meetings to voice their opinions and be kept informed as the planning process moved forward. After a year of analysis and discussion, a set of criteria for the renewal of the park was established, which then served as the basis for a design competition that included several landscape architecture firms. H+N+S, a leading Dutch urban planning and landscape architecture firm was selected for the final masterplan which was presented in 2003. For the moment the implementation of the plan is contingent on future financial and political support. The first phase of the plan however --a multifunctional loop for walking, biking and rollerskating around the central lake-- will soon be completed. |
